    Prensa musical

    Confirmed, OutKast Reuniting In 2014

After years of speculation, André "André 3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton aka OutKast are indeed reuniting next year, 2014. It was officially confirmed by Revolt TV that the duo will be heading back on the road to tour. In addition it was confirmed by OutKast collaborator Sleepy Brown that they will also be performing at next year's Coachella.

So twenty years after their debut, the duo is back. Fingers-crossed that we'll also be graced by one of the greatest duos in hip hop and pop music if all time.

Kings of Leon's "Beautiful War" Video Is an Epic Southern Tragedy

It doesn't get much more Kings of Leon-y than this: The video for the Followill clan's seven-minute-long slow-burner "Beautiful War"—itself an utter Kings of Leon-y name—is a country tragedy, complete with beers, Southern belles, bull riding, county jail and a slice of redemption.

It starts with a longhaired, button-up badass hitting the local bar and bowling alley. He dances with his lady but after a few beers is caught flirting with another girl at the bar. In fit of jealousy, his main squeeze heads to the mechanical bull—the name of Kings of Leon's new album—and shakes it for the crowd. A fight between her brother and boyfriend ensues and ultimately ends in tragedy, with our badass behind bars (not without his cowboy hat, though).

A moment of redemption, however, is delivered in a prison yard bull ride—where else? It's eight seconds of glory set to atmospheric, whiskey-soaked, U2-like drama as only KOL can deliver it. Watch above.

Queens of the Stone Age Drop Creepy 'Vampyre of Time and Memory' Video

At long last, Queens of the Stone Age have released the official video for ...Like Clockwork slow-burner "The Vampyre of Time and Memory." The desert dwellers first teased the interactive clip in late October, with a promise that the horror-themed short would be released on October 30, just in time for Halloween. Mischief Night came and went, and aside from a performance on Conan, the holiday passed without an appearance from "The Vampyre of Time and Memory." QOTSA have now filled that absence.

The video, directed by Kii Arens and Jason Trucco and produced by the Creators Project, is available in two formats: a standard version (dubbed the "Directors' Cut") that's streaming above, and an interactive version that can be seen at the project's official website. Keeping with the trailer's sinister aesthetic and menacing tone, the noninteractive "Vampyre of Time and Memory" cuts between shots of sinister-looking maids glowering at the camera, QOTSA performing in a lair filled with taxidermied animals, and close-ups of Josh Homme's fingernails, which look like they've been manicured by Nosferatu.

Bruce Springsteen Shares 'High Hopes' for New Album With Tom Morello

The Boss is back. Bruce Springsteen has revealed that his next album will be released on January 14 via Columbia. Dubbed High Hopes, the LP is Springsteen's 18th studio effort and the follow-up to 2012's Wrecking Ball. The record spans a total of 12 tracks, collecting fresh material, covers, and new versions of older songs.

Bruce paired the announcement with a lyric video for the album's lead single, "High Hopes," a tune originally written by the Havalinas' Tim Scott McConnell. Springsteen previously covered the song for 1996's Blood Brothers EP, but now he's cut a new version featuring Rage Against the Machine guitar god Tom Morello, who toured with the E Street Band earlier this year.

"I was working on a record of some of our best unreleased material from the past decade when Tom Morello (sitting in for [Steven Van Zandt] during the Australian leg of our tour) suggested we ought to add 'High Hopes' to our live set," Springsteen writes in the liner-notes for High Hopes. "Tom and his guitar became my muse, pushing the rest of this project to another level."

Morello appears on eight of the album's 12 songs, including a reworked version of 1995's "The Ghost of Tom Joad," in which he duets with Springsteen. High Hopes also packs in covers of tracks by Suicide ("Dream Baby Dream") and Australian punks the Saints ("Just Like Fire Would"), as well as a studio version of "American Skin (41 Shots)," a song that so far has only been available as a live recording.

The upcoming album was recorded in a number of different locations — New Jersey (of course), Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia, and New York City — and boasts production work by Brendan O'Brien and Ron Aniello, with some input from Springsteen himself. Longtime fans will likely be comforted to know that the late Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, played on several of the full-length's songs.

Stream the gruff, horn-enhanced title track from High Hopes above, and scroll down for the record's track list and cover art. Head over to Springsteen's official website to read his full liner-notes on the project.

Dave Grohl & Zac Brown Band Releasing EP in December

When Dave Grohl sat in with the Zac Brown Band at the 2013 Country Music Awards earlier this month, it wasn't a one-off or a publicity stunt: The Foo Fighters frontman and country-folk outfit are releasing a collaborative EP in December!

The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1 comes out 12/10 on iTunes and includes "Day of the Dead," the song they performed at the CMAs together. Vol. 2 is in the works for 2014 as well as a physical vinyl release of Vol. 1.

Speaking to the AP, Brown revealed this whole thing started when he was waiting in line at John Varvatos' Hollywood store to pick up altered clothing for the Grammys. He and Grohl struck up a conversation and the next thing he knew, his band was jamming with the singer-guitarist-drummer.

"I don't know how I tricked him into working with us, but it's really cool," Brown said. Well, we have a guess: Grohl loves making music with anyone else whose work he digs. Within the last year, Grohl teamed up with hard rockers Ghost B.C. and released his collabo-centric Sound City documentary.

Sexo, drogas y rock'n'roll, ¿no?

Lana Del Rey Makes Elvis' Temperature Rise in New 'Tropico' Teaser

Some say "Burning Love" is an Elvis Presley song — and, well, they're right — but its mix of Lord-Almighty religious imagery and infernal lust suits Lana Del Rey just fine in her latest Tropico teaser. Previous trailers for the Born to Die singer's December 5 short film have given us doppelgangers for John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, and Jesus Christ. In a 60-second promo released over the weekend, an Elvis lookalike drawls about feeling "my temperature rising" to start a clip that's heavy on T&A.

Mick Taylor to join The Rolling Stones for 2014 tour

The band will perform live in Abu Dhabi on February 21, 2014, before heading out on the road across the Far East and Asia to play three shows in Tokyo and a one-off show in Macau. They will then travel to Australia and New Zealand for one-off shows in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Hanging Rock, Brisbane and Auckland. Two further shows in Asia are expected to be announced shortly.

Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Rolling Stones from 1969-1974, will be a special guest for the tour, which is titled '14 On Fire'.

The band's last gigs were in July this year (2013), when they played two sold-out headline dates at London's Hyde Park, however the band are yet to announce any further UK dates.

Ronnie Wood previously discussed plans for a world tour in 2014 earlier this year. "While the big wheel is rolling we are going to capture it before it stops totally," he said. Wood added that the band were overwhelmed by the reaction to their 50th anniversary gigs, which included their debut performance at Glastonbury festival. "Everybody had a smile on their face, which was brilliant," he said.

Last month (November), the band released their Hyde Park gig on DVD and Blu-Ray in November. The film, titled 'Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live', captured the band's full performance, a full two-hour set plus backstage footage. A live album recorded during the shows is also available.

Spotify Reveals How Much, or How Little, It Pays Per Stream

A stream pays out less than a penny, and how much goes to musicians and songwriters is unclear

The debate over music's ongoing shift toward online streaming just got a tiny bit more transparent. For all the heated opinions both for and against Pandora, Spotify, iTunes Radio, Google Play, All Music, YouTube, and the like, the rest of us have had very little actual data on how much musicians make when listeners stream their songs. That's why it was The New York Times-worthy earlier this year when an avant-garde cellist named Zoe Keating broke down her online earnings. That's why we're left trying to parse blog posts by Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven curmudgeon David Lowery.

Spotify has now made official what was widely assumed: An individual stream of a song costs it less than a penny. As The Guardian reports, Spotify has launched a new Spotify Artists website, where it reveals the average payout to rights holders ranges from 0.6 cents to 0.84 cents. That would generally include payouts to labels, managers, and so on. The people who sing and write the songs tend to get an even smaller cut.

Spotify says on the site that looking at per-stream numbers is a "highly flawed" way of assessing its value to musicians, arguing that its expanding user base will lead to more streams and more royalties. Spotify discloses that royalty payouts account for almost 70 percent of its total revenues. Overall, the company says it has paid out more than $500 million to rights holders this year, and more than $1 billion since opening its doors in 2008.

The artist website goes into further breakdowns of the numbers. For instance, it says a "niche indie album" resulted in $3,300 in Spotify payouts in July, while a "global hit album" led to $425,000 in payouts. It notes that Spotify pays out $6,000 to $8,400 per million listens, compared with $3,000 for a "video streaming service" such as YouTube and $1,300 to $1,500 for a "radio streaming service" such as Pandora.

The additional clarity is welcome, but it won't and shouldn't end the discussion. As The Guardian notes, Spotify's argument that royalties will increase as its user base grows overlooks the company's mounting losses. Nor does it address David Byrne's concern that few artists on the fringes of the mainstream will be able to pay their bills this way — we repeat, that's $6,000 to $8,400 for one million streams. Streaming holdout Thom Yorke has expressed a similar worry, arguing that "artists get paid fuck all." Damon Krukowski of Galaxie 500 and Damon & Naomi wrote for Pitchfork that he stood to earn as much from 1,000 vinyl singles in 1988 as he did from 13 million streams last year. (It's also well worth reading Kelefa Sanneh's recent, carefully balanced New Yorker piece, "Blockbuster," which touches on likeminded issues.)

Spotify acknowledges it's not necessarily ideal now for all artists but says it wanted to clear up the thinking behind its business. Spotify's director of artist services, Mark Williamson, told The Guardian: "With any format change in music – CD and iTunes included – there's a lot of confusion around how these different models work, and quite often some serious skepticism. We understand that's out there, so we want to be as clear and transparent as we possibly can explaining how Spotify fits in."

In other online royalty-related developments, Aimee Mann's $18 million copyright infringement case against digital-music operations company MediaNet just got an early go-ahead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a federal judge has rejected all but one part of MediaNet's argument to have the case thrown out of court. Mann has 21 days to tweak her legalese, and then the case — a fascinating one that illustrates the complexities of the digital music biz — should move ahead. At this point, no need to serenade the guy in robes with "Save Me."

Daft Punk unveil 'Instant Crush' video featuring Julian Casablancas – watch

Daft Punk have revealed the full version of the video for their track 'Instant Crush', featuring a puppet version of Julian Casablancas of The Strokes.

The video, which was teased on a French news channel yesterday, can be seen in full above. Casablancas appears as himself in the video and as a mannequin dressed like Napolean.

'Instant Crush' is the latest single to be taken from the French duo's album 'Random Access Memories'. The LP was originally released on May and this week had its record as the UK's fastest-selling album of 2013 beaten by One Direction.

Daft Punk recently released details of a 'Random Access Memories' deluxe boxset. The set will be priced at £175 and is believed to be ready to hit shelves in time for Christmas. It will feature a special edition 180 gram double vinyl of the album and a 10-inch vinyl, plus a host of memorabilia and collectibles including a 56-page cloth-bound hardcover photo book of images taken from the recording sessions.

Pixies Draw A Perfect Circle's Paz Lenchantin as New Touring Bassist

The Pixies have solidified their lineup as the revived alternative-rock pioneers expand their 2014 touring schedule. Paz Lenchantin, who previously played bass as a member of A Perfect Circle and Billy Corgan's early-'00s Zwan project, will step in as the new touring bassist, the band announced today.

Lenchantin takes over for Kim Shattuck, who revealed in late November she'd be leaving the band only four months after replacing founding bassist Kim Deal. Lenchantin has also contributed to records by Queens of the Stone Age, Silver Jews, Brightblack Morning Light, Melissa Auf der Mar, Jenny Lewis, the Entrance Band, and others. (That Brightblack Morning Light album in particular is an underrated stunner.) She recently toured with psych-folk singer-songwriter Josephine Foster.

"We are really looking forward to playing with her on these dates," Pixies drummer David Lovering said of Lenchantin in a statement. "Working with different bass players is very new for the band, but we're having a great time doing it."

Lenchantin joins the Pixies as the band heads into a previously announced North American tour. Today, the group added a new series of spring and summer dates, including Southh American and European festival appearances. Scroll down for the full details.

At the same time, Pixies have revealed another EP-1 video. The clip for "Another Toe in the Ocean" was directed and animated by Liviu Boar of Romania-basd ReeAnimation. It follows recent shorts for the new EP's "What Goes Boom," "Andro Queen," "Indie Cindy," and "Bagboy" (twice). If you have troubles with the video below, watch it here.
